چکیده
provided assistance in the development of the analysis software and data verification. Summary This document describes the initial formulation (Version 1.0.0) of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program satellite data analysis procedures. Techniques are presented for calibrating geostationary satellite data with Sun synchronous satellite radiances and for converting narrowband radiances to top-of-the-atmosphere fluxes and albedos. A methodology is documented for combining geostationary visible and infrared radiances with surface-based temperature observations to derive cloud amount, optical depth, height, thickness, temperature, and albedo. The analysis is limited to two grids centered over the ARM Southern Great Plains Central Facility in northcentral Oklahoma. Daytime data taken April 5 to May 1, 1994 were analyzed on the 0.3° and 0.5° latitude-longitude grids that cover areas of 0.9° × 0.9° and 10° × 14°, respectively. A variety of cloud conditions ranging from scattered low cumulus to thin cirrus and thick cumulonimbus occurred during the study period. Detailed comparisons with hourly surface observations indicate that the mean cloudiness is within a few percent of the surface-derived sky cover. Formats of the results are also provided. The data can be accessed on the Internet via the World Wide Web at the following uniform resource locator:

A 3-Year Climatology of Cloud and Radiative Properties Derived from GOES-8 Data Over the Southern Great Plains
While the various instruments maintained at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program Southern Great Plains (SGP) Central Facility (CF) provide detailed cloud and radiation measurements for a small area, satellite cloud property retrievals provide a means of examining the large-scale properties of the surrounding region over an extended period of time. Seasonal and inter-annual climat...
متن کاملValidation of GOES-7 to a Radiation Budget for April and July 1994 ARM/IOP Using ScaRaB/Meteor-3/7 Data
Data from the ScaRaB radiometer flown on board the Meteor3/7 satellite were employed for validating a TOA Earth radiation budget product generated from GOES-7 for the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program. Comparisons were made between coincident and collocated shortwave and long-wave radiative quantities derived from ScaRaB and GOES sensors over the Southern Great Plains (SGP) Cloud ...
متن کاملImproved ARM-SGP TOA OLR Fluxes from GOES-8 IR Radiances Based on CERES Data
The radiation budget at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) is a quantity of fundamental importance to the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program. Thus, it is necessary to measure the radiation budget components, broadband shortwave albedo and outgoing longwave radiation (OLR), as accurately as possible. Measurement of OLR over the ARM surface sites has only been possible since the advent ...
متن کاملComparisons of Cloud Heights Derived from Satellite and Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Surface Lidar Data
Cloud heights derived from single-channel, satellite infrared data can be relatively uncertain under certain conditions such as overlapped or optically thin clouds. During the daytime, optical depths derived from 0.63 μm visible (VIS) reflectances are used to adjust the altitude of optically thin clouds. Without the adjustment, the cloud heights are significantly underestimated diminishing the ...
متن کاملUse of ScaRaB Measurements for Validating a GOES-Based TOA Radiation Product
Lack of calibrated radiation measurements at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) between major spaceborne radiation missions entails inference of the TOA radiation budget from operational weather sensors. The inferred data are subject to uncertainties due to calibration, narrowto broadband conversion, etc. In this study, a surrogate TOA earth radiation budget product generated from GOES-7 (Geostati...
